Founder’s story

Patrick Tamba Tengbeh

The story of the Youth Empowerment, Leadership and Governance Initiative (YELGI) is deeply connected to the life journey of its founder, Patrick Tamba Tengbeh.

Patrick was born in a refugee camp in Guinea during the Sierra Leone civil war. His early life was shaped by the challenges of displacement, instability, and the struggle for basic opportunities. Growing up in these difficult circumstances allowed him to see firsthand how conflict, poor governance, and lack of opportunities affect young people and communities.

Despite these challenges, Patrick remained determined to pursue education and personal development. Through perseverance and commitment, he continued his academic journey and developed a strong interest in governance, leadership, and public policy.

Today, Patrick holds a Master’s degree in Governance and is pursuing advanced studies in International Organizations and Legislative Affairs, focusing on how institutions, policies, and democratic systems can improve people's lives. His academic and professional experiences have strengthened his belief that young people must be empowered to actively participate in shaping their societies.

Throughout his journey, Patrick has also worked with organizations supporting migrants and vulnerable communities, gaining practical experience in advocacy, community engagement, and social development.

These experiences inspired him to establish the Youth Empowerment, Leadership and Governance Initiative (YELGI).

YELGI was founded with a clear vision: to create opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills, participate in governance processes, and contribute meaningfully to national development. The organization aims to build a generation of ethical, responsible, and visionary leaders who can help strengthen democratic governance and promote sustainable development in Sierra Leone.

Patrick believes that the future of Sierra Leone lies in the hands of its young people. By investing in youth leadership, education, and civic engagement, YELGI seeks to transform challenges into opportunities and empower young people to become agents of positive change.

The journey from a refugee camp to becoming a youth advocate and founder of a leadership initiative reflects a simple but powerful message:

“Every young person, regardless of their background, has the potential to lead and make a difference.”
